    Best Guess: Cyber Monday

So many things to write about from the weekend.  First, I predicted sales would be strong on Black Friday, and they were.  But some data I looked at Thursday night pointed to online sales, not foot traffic sales.  As I write this we begin Cyber Monday, and I admit, I’m curious what types of deals may be out there since I personally have not bought one gift.  One thing we saw was large discounts, and that seems to have brought out the bargain shoppers (I count myself among that group).  However, the margins are going to be slimmer in my opinion for retail companies.  Not exactly a market positive.

    Happy Cyber Monday!

Ok. November is Alzheimers Awareness month and with the Shriver report just out as part of Maria Shrivers campaign for her father people will be talking more about the lack of funding for research. This year $6 billion will go to cancer research and $4 billion to cardio vascular research yet only $500 million will go to Alzheimers. 1 our of every 3 people will have the disease by the age of 80 and unlike cancer or heart disease you can’t beat it.

Stocks have been rising as the dollar has been falling.  Many say that move has been fully priced into the market.
My best guess is that it has not been fully priced into the market and the dollar will continue to slide.

DEMS WILL LOSE THE HOUSE (BADLY)… BUT RETAIN THE SENATE.   THE ELECTORAL TSYNAMI WILL CAUSE SEVERAL DEMOCRATIC SENATORS (especially those up for re-election in 2 years) TO BECOME “DE FACTO” REPUBLICANS… GIVING THE GOP POWER IN THE SENATE TO REVERSE COURSE.

    YOU

President Obama will look to hire more business leaders after watching the Noon show on Fox Business.

Tax deductions including mortgage interest, Child Tax credits and paying for insurance with pre-tax dollars could be eliminated at recommendation of Obama’s Deficit Reduction commission except for lower income families as a way to balance 2015 budgets. I predict these reforms will be used politically by Dems but find little support for passage.

Oil!  Prices are going higher and will hit $95/bbl by Thanksgiving.  A $6 pop in oil prices is worth 3 cents more on retail gasoline prices.  In turn, a three cent increase in retail gasoline prices is worth $3 billion in higher household energy consumption.  Christmas takes a hit and Santa has to layoff some of his staff.  :)

Mark-up is huge on most items, but the bargain basement pricing has to really dip into the profit margin (looming deflation?). I heard Black Friday was good for buying TV's and computers, while clothing will be knocked-down further in the next few weeks. A shopper's paradise,a retailer's lifeline (maybe). Happy Holidays!!!
