    Best Guess: 2010 Review

We always end the show with myself and my guest hosts throwing out our “Best Guess”.  Sometimes we are right, and sometimes we are very, very wrong.  As I look back on a spectacular year for the Noon show on Fox Business, it is now my duty to give credit to those who made the right call, and call out those got it wrong.

Todd Shoenberger was right on 12/14…..

“When–not if–the Bush tax cuts are extended (for all), look for the S&P 500 to rally for 5% over the course of a week.  And, the leader of the day will come from the consumer discretionary group (i.e., retailers)!

CC: Indeed, retailers were the shining stars, and if you bought the stocks, you’d be thanking him.

    But he was wrong 11/17…..

“GM stock will shoot higher in the first few trading days, but after euphoria evaporates, look for stock to finish lower 10-15% from its IPO price–by year-end.”

CC: In fact, the opposite happened! GM stock hit a fresh high of $38.30 on January 5th.

    Todd also missed this one…..

“Oil!  Prices are going higher and will hit $95/bbl by Thanksgiving.”

CC:  Oil didn’t crack the $90 a barrel ceiling until December 22nd.

    I was wrong on 12/13…….

“Dow ends the year up 12%”

CC:  The Dow ended the year up only 11%!

Me again and I was wrong wrong wrong….

“Retail sales in December will show weakness because the bulk of spending hit in November.”

CC: Actually, the retail sector finished the month and the year substantially higher. Consumer discretionary stocks gained 25% in 2010.

Dennis Kneale was wrong on this one….

“I predict the Bush tax deal will fall apart!  And key changes will be made that will raise taxes on over-$1mil earners.”

CC: The deal went through eventually but only after some angry speeches from President Obama.

On 12/2 Mark Decambre was off the mark:

“Derek Jeter will NOT be a Yankee next year.”

CC: Derek Jeter signed a 3 year deal worth $51 million.

On 10/27 Gregg hit this one on the nose:

“Dems will lose the House badly….but retain the Senate.”

CC:  They lost badly indeed in November.

Great show and an even better host! Love tuning in at 12noon. Some guests are better than others. Schoenberger is the best one, followed probably by Kimberly Guilfoyle. Need to have them on more. From a markets/legal perspective, I get more out of this show than others. Keep up the good work!
