    Pepsico: Diversity Top Down

    We launched our 2011 “American Icon” series out of Purchase, New York from the headquarters of Pepsico on Tuesday. The location shoot was over quickly, but it took two months to coordinate all of the logistics with the help of my producer Yvette Michael. I have to credit her for all the work she did in planning the day. Sadly, Yvette had to travel to Cairo and she missed seeing the end result of her labor.

    I mention Yvette because she and I share the same love of international news and culture. She is always looking for the next undiscovered corner of the world to see, as am I. I took a job out of college as a flight attendant so that I could see other countries (the view was rather small from my Arizona window.) Yvette had that same idea when she left Malaysia to pursue a career in journalism.

    Why do I bring this to your attention as I reflect on my day at Pepsico? Because Yvette would have been awestruck with the diversity that is the company. It’s such a buzz word, a catch phrase for business, the word diversity. “We believe in diversity at xx company.” What’s ironic is that not once did anyone from Pepsico say to me “Cheryl we’d like you to highlight what a diverse company we are.” They just ARE.

    The halls were filled with men and women of every age and background, obviously from different countries, as varied as the colors of a rainbow. I don’t know if Pepsico set out to do this under the leadership of Indian born Indra Nooyi; I don’t know if it’s on the welcome book when you get a job with Pepsico. I just know what I saw in the halls of Pepsico, and I thought it was worth sharing with you here what we didn’t share on television.

Your interview with the PepsiCo people was an embarassment to FOX and a huge 'puff piece' for PepsiCo. The company's PR people must be laughing out loud.... With a swarming backdrop of PepsiCo products lining shelves all around and bleeding through all edges of the TV screen, all I heard was three people gushing profusely about how wonderful this company is. Ugh.

My husband and I want to know why the Industrial Ticker no longer runs on your ticker tape on your show? We have three stocks in industrials and have to change channels to see how they are doing. Please put them back on. C. Devore

Excellent message - to be color blind,socially comfortable with everyone,and open to different cultures and ideas makes for a productive,happy and great place to work! Each workplace has the yearly "diversity" training - my group always says we should be on stage giving that seminar!
